Elements of a Successful Social Media Video

All last month, we were focused on web design. We discussed the layout of an effective home page, and we even delved into the differences and relationship between UI and UX design. For April, we’ll be shifting back to a focus on video and specifically the elements that make a successful one. Since video is still king when it comes to social media, we thought it would be helpful to point out some elements and considerations that are typically found in successful social media videos. So, let’s not waste any time.

1) Correct Specs

At the end of the day, the social media platform that you’re creating content for determines a great deal. For Instagram reels and TikTok, there’s a specific orientation and size that need to be followed. For Facebook, it depends on whether you’re sharing a story or posting on a regular page. Know the proper aspect ratio needed for your preferred outlet. This should inform not only your final product but also the filming conditions of said video.

Another part of this goes beyond the orientation of the video. There are different time limits for different platforms, so be sure to plan accordingly. You might need to create different cuts of the same video to meet the time requirements of each platform.

2) Compelling Visuals

Easily the most recognizable part of a successful social media video is the visuals. It’s a visual medium after all. So, use stable footage, captivating shots, good lighting, and interesting angles. Utilize graphics and text to keep and draw attention. Also, you want a message that people can connect with; so, don’t forget that important element as you craft your video content.

3) Quality Audio

In case you were wondering, no, we will never stop emphasizing the need for quality audio in videos. We’re utterly convinced that audio is the unsung hero of the video world, and nothing makes that more clear than a video without clear, coherent audio. Sure, a lot of people watch videos without the sound on, but don’t let that deter you from making audio a priority. We recommend using a microphone if anyone is speaking in your video. In addition to this, take advantage of music and sound effects that are going to enhance the quality of your video and more clearly define its tone.

4) Efficient Use of Text

Like we said above, it’s not unusual for people to watch videos while scrolling something like Instagram on mute. So, the use of text is incredibly important, and we do recommend utilizing subtitles. You can add subtitles yourself in the editing process, or a lot of social media platforms will have an option to automatically generate them. If you pick the latter, though, just remember to edit them and correct any typos you see.

5) Intentional Additions

There are a ton of little additions that can make a video even better. You can add a lower third reveal, animations, and 2D flash elements to enhance a video. You can add your logo as a watermark to push your own visibility. You can add stingers to point toward your company or the next step any potential customer should take. There are endless possibilities, so choose appropriately based on the tone and subject of your video.
